Nigeria is home to a rich variety of forests and wildlife. Regrettably, this source of national pride has been threatened in recent times by deforestation, the industrial and agricultural logging of wood, among other factors.
Deforestation is a leading contributor to global climate change. Every year, Nigeria loses 350,000 to 400,000 hectares of land per year to deforestation. Estimates show that over 1 billion people depend on forests for their day-to-day lives. Forests offer a myriad of other benefits for our planet, including soil protection, water regulation, climate regulation, non-timber products like food and fibre, and over 80% of land biodiversity. Our trees absorb greenhouse gasses and carbon emissions. They produce oxygen and perpetuate the water cycle by releasing water vapor into the atmosphere. Without trees, forest lands can quickly become barren land.
REDD+ aims to preserve forests; and is geared towards incentivising developing countries in creating mitigation strategies that foster conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
